She Looks Like a Movie Star

It has been a devastating month. I have not picked up needle and thread and probably won’t next month, either.

That is my update for the Chookshed Stitchers 2024 Challenge – July, and it will be the same next month. I am linking up here, if you would like to see the other participant’s fun projects!

The rest of this post has lots of photos and deep meaning for me. You are welcome to stay if you’d like.

Meet Dorothy Joan Jewell, born in 1931, my Mama (isn’t she adorable!).

I love these old photos…they are a peak into what life was like back in the day!

A four year old Jody (she was never actually called Dorothy), being hugged by her step-daddy, George.

In 1935, five year old Jody had her picture taken professionally with her parents, George and Betty.

Jody, with her brother, George Jr. He liked to be called Uncle Ed (after his middle name, Edward). He was so much fun to be with!

This color photo of Jody in 1938, reminds me so much of my youngest sister!

Jody is growing up! Here she is, about 1947, 16 years old and beautiful!

Mom’s graduation photo, 1949. I thought she was the most beautiful woman in the world when I first saw this photo. I still think so!

I loved the photo so much, that I decided to take an art portrait class and create a quilt to honor her. In 2004, I completed that quilt, and presented it to Mom for Christmas.

You can click on the photo above to enlarge it. It will be much easier to read the label! Then you will understand the title of this portrait quilt.

Mom married Dad (Ray) in 1950. I bet it was a fairy tale wedding!

This is Mom in 1951. I believe it was during her honeymoon.

Five daughters came along for the ride! For the curious, I am the one in the upper right. This photo was taken in 1981.

Here we are again, in 2006. We had a fantastic time together in Victoria, B.C., Canada! Again, I am in the upper right, for the curious.

Still beautiful as ever! I think this photo was taken sometime around 2019. She loved pink, and she wore it well!

I know that you have gone before me to a place of glory; a place of brilliant colors and unsurpassed love, but I miss you, Mama,… so, so much!

Chookshed Stitchers 2024 Challenge – July

This year seems to be flying by so fast! We are already into July!

My Chookshed Stitchers challenge for July is Number 1 on the list. You can see my project list in this post.

Chookshed Stitchers 2024 Challenge

Number 1 for me is my Checkerboard Rails project.

This project was begun in September, 2023, and I wrote about this project here and here.

I left off needing more blocks (because naturally, I miscounted), and setting the blocks together.

Hopefully, this can come together as a flimsy and get a backing for it this month!

Chookshed Stitchers 2024 Challenge – June Update

My Chookshed Stitchers 2024 Challenge for June was number 10, an old embroidery project that I want to move forward. This project has been hanging out in the studio very patiently waiting its turn to shine.

Fall Moon Embroidery

I shared about this project in this post. I needed to decide whether to rip out my cloud stitching and try again, or go with it.

I decided to go with it. I am doing the stitching my way. You know…the best I can. That is how we do things, right?

Once that decision was made, I could finally move on.

The cording was stitched down, and became the means to create dimension in the tree trunk.

Fall Moon Embroidery

It is hard to photograph dimension, but hopefully you can see some of it.

Fall Moon Embroidery

There is a dimensional branch made of wire.

Fall Moon Embroidery

I didn’t work on this for most of the month. Instead I spent a lot of time in the garden.

And I went to the west coast to attend my grandson’s wedding (time is flying!).

I caught up on other projects.

Still, I am happy with how this is progressing, even though my stitches are not executed in the ‘proper’ way!

I am too late to link up with other challenge participants over at Dreamworthy Quilts for the June updates, but come on over with me and check them out! Maybe you will see something to inspire you!

Have fun and carry on!
