Yaquina Bay Lighthouse

Still on our journey, traveling north on the Oregon Coast on scenic Highway 101, we stopped at the Yaquina Bay Lighthouse. The lighthouse was closed (not due to open for about 3 more hours), but we enjoyed stretching our legs on such a beautiful morning.

I think you can read the sign above, especially if you click on it, but I will transcribe it for you:

Yaquina Bay Lighthouse was active for only three years due to the establishment of the larger Yaquina Head Light in 1873 that was located 3 miles north. The lighthouse was decommissioned on October 1, 1874, because the newer Yaquina Head Light made it obsolete.

Both the United States Army Corps of Engineers and the United States Coast Guard (who resided during the years 1906-1915 and built the eight-story steel observation tower) used the lighthouse.

The lighthouse was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970, and restored under the Historic Preservation Act in 1974. At that time, its ownership was transferred to the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department.

The light was re-lit on December 7, 1996. The lighthouse is now privately maintained belonging to the U.S. Coast Guard that displays a fixed white light visible for six miles.

Umpqua River Lighthouse

The Hubster and I recently took a trip to the west coast. We didn’t do a lot of sight seeing as this was a trip specifically to see family. We stopped on the Washington coast to visit our son and his family, and then straight down the Oregon coast to visit my sister and her husband. Sis and I were so excited to see each other…it has been a very long time!

On the way back, we did stop at a couple of places. One of them was the Umpqua River Lighthouse. We left my sister’s home later in the day, so by the time we reached this lighthouse, the museum and lighthouse were closed.

That was okay. We enjoyed being out of the car, and taking in the view!

The Umpqua River Lighthouse was the first lighthouse on the Oregon Coast. It is located near Reedsport,  at the top of the 100-foot bluff overlooking the mouth of the Umpqua River entrance into Winchester Bay.

The lighthouse was built in 1855 and lit in 1857 along the sandy beach of the Umpqua River. Less than 10 years later, in February 1864, a new lighthouse was needed. Due to flooding, the original lighthouse had fallen over.

The original light was not visible at sea and was only usable as an aid to ships approaching the river.

The fully operational and automated light can now be seen as far as 21 nautical miles.

Chookshed Stitchers 2024 Challenge – September Update

I fell behind in the Chookshed Stitchers 2024 Challenge, but I am moving projects forward from my challenge list.

I am happy to share that June’s project, #10, really is finished! I found a frame that I like so here ya go:

Fall Moon Embroidery

In July, the #1 was drawn, and my #1 is my Checkerboard Rails project. The design is from Bonnie Hunter. I wanted to use up some of my hand-dyes and I am loving how this is turning out!

This baby is now a flimsy!

#3 was drawn in August. This plush owl kit from Connecting Threads has been taking up space in the sewing studio for who knows how long.

I have all three owls cut out and partly sewn, so this project is on the move!

September’s number is #7. My #7 is the Garden Baskets project. I used my hand-dyes for this project as well.

(There are links at the end of this post that share my progress up to this point.)

Garden Baskets

I got bored with this, and it has really slowed me down. I must’ve been delirious when I decided that I would hand stitch a couple of hundred leaves in the borders.

Putting Garden Baskets on my challenge list was a great idea, since I am moving this forward!

As you can see from the photos, I have finished one border and am making good progress on a second one.

October’s project is notebook covers. It is the last of this year’s Chookshed Stitchers Challenge 2024. I am taking a trip to see family shortly, and may not get to this last number from the challenge list. At least not in October.

If the Chookshed Stitchers Challenge link shows up before I go on vacation, then I will link up with other challenge participants over at Dreamworthy Quilts. You might like to check it out!

Have fun and carry on!
