I began making Bonnie Hunter’s checkerboard rail fence pattern in September 2023 with the idea of using up my stash of hand dyed fabric.
I thought that this project would be colorful and fun.
And it is!
The flimsy was completed in September 2024.
It took a year because I had joined a challenge group and worked through a project a month, so it was often set aside.
That’s okay. This is a hobby, not a job!
It has taken another year to get to the finish line. Partly procrastination. Partly life events (I am so far behind in reading all of the wonderful blog posts by internet friends, but I will get back into the swing of things).
And I have made it to the finish line!
The back is made from more hand dyes…so happy to use them up!
All quilted and bound!
I will wash it to get that wonderful texture that so many of us love!

What a great finish! Finishes, slow or fast, are always satisfying!

Yes! I remember this one. What ‘should’ be a dizzy-busy pattern combo turned out fantastically and creatively cohesive. What is the finished size? It looks on the larger size – as in: it can be used as a bed quilt if desired. BTW: it’s great to see a fellow ‘slow stitcher’ get to the finish line…especially when the journey is filled with ‘color & fun’! YaY!

Thanks Laura. Yes, this is a big one. I have neglected to measure, but it is approximately 86″ x 96″; big enough for a bed quilt. 🙂

This one’s a beauty, Laura! I love the bright strips with the black and white checkerboards. Congratulations on your finish!

Sharon, I used to enter quilts in fairs and quilt shows, but gave that up a long time ago. One year, I even headed up the quilting department for the fair. lt was fun for sure, but also I got tired of quilting to please the judges. Now I quilt to please myself. Thank you for the compliment…they are always welcome! 🙂
