Eddystone Light Quilt Block

One of the things that I love about Electric Quilt, is the quick and easy way to visualize what a block will look like in a quilt setting.

Let’s look at the Eddystone Light quilt block from Nancy Martin’s Perpetual Calendar.

Eddystone Light is drafted from a 6 x 6 grid.

If you have BlockBase, Eddystone Light is number 2073.

Here it is presented in a simple straight set (blocks set square…side by side) with borders:

With sashing added:

And with the Basic 4X block:

I think I’ll go back to my file and recolor that Basic 4X block so that half is white and half is blue…just to get a visual.  I might, or might not, like it better.  I am wondering if it would create more depth to the design.

Plain blocks and alternate blocks open up areas for applique, areas to show off quilting, and alter a design in very pleasing and unexpected ways.

Here is what Eddystone Light looks like in a simple on point set with borders:

Nice, but let’s add some plain blocks:

I think that is more interesting.  When I move the blocks around, I get lots of designs and it is much more fun!

This is what happens when I add sashing and substitute the plain blocks with the Basic 4X blocks:

So go ahead and have fun!  Try on different borders, change the color and value, rotate the blocks, and try different block combinations.

Carrie Nation Quilt Block

This week, I present the Carrie Nation quilt block, also included in the Nancy Martin’s 365  Quilt Blocks A Year Perpetual Calendar.

If you have BlockBase, it is listed as number 1105.

The Carrie Nation block is drawn with a 4 x 4 grid.

Using EQ7, here the blocks are in a straight set (set squarely side-by-side):

With sashing separating each block:

What if we turned blocks:

There are lots of variations that can happen when turning the blocks; I’ve only shown one.

And then there is the on point setting:

This simple little block is so versatile; it is a great one to choose for quick and easy projects, baby quilts, modern quilts and more!

New York Beauty Block

It has been quite awhile since I played with Electric Quilt.  So I had an early shower, put on my pajamas, and cozied up on the couch with my laptop.

New York Beauty is an old file (like many, many moons ago) that I thought would be fun to spend an evening with.  This block can offer up so many variations; one can play for hours!

I made a New York Beauty quilt several years ago.  I made it by the paper piecing method.  I love the quilt, and it won The Harpist’s Award at the Washington State Quilters – Spokane Chapter quilt show (I’m sorry I don’t have a photo for you).  But removing paper is tedious.

Linda Franz, over at Inklingo, has made this very easy (no paper piecing here).  I have no affiliation; but I recognize a good thing when I see one (I wish I had seen this sooner.).  She has created a great New York Beauty design (not like the one shown here) that has shapes that can be printed directly onto fabric.  Check it out by clicking here and here and here and here (all different posts with lots of inspiration).

Happy quilting!
