Waterwheel Quilt Block

I have been using  the Nancy Martin’s Perpetual Calendar 365 Quilt Blocks A Year to inspire myself to practice design. One of the August blocks is called Waterwheel.

Waterwheel Quilt Block

I drew my block on 4 x 4 grid using Electric Quilt 8.  You can certainly draw it with a pencil and graph paper.

I like to set the block side by side in a straight set just to get a feel for how it looks.

Waterwheel Straight Set

I had such a hard time getting inspired by this block that it has taken me weeks of procrastination to play with it.

Maybe sashing would make it look better?

Maybe rotating the blocks would help.

Rotated blocks without the sashing:

Maybe I’d like it better with a different colorway.

Or how about set on point?

Perhaps you might find a setting and/or a colorway for the Waterwheel block that really inspires you.

As for me…I am ready to move on to another block.

Mother’s Choice Quilt Block Part 2

In this blogpost, I showed a few straight set quilt designs using the Mother’s Choice Quilt Block.

I also played with the block using an on point setting.

The same block set on point with no sashing or alternate blocks:

I don’t like the above design at all.  However, I do like the blocks set with sashing and cornerstones:

And I like the block set with plain setting triangles; they frame the design:

Maybe I would like this one better in a different colorway, or with some alternate blocks to play with:

I like the center of this one (and it doesn’t look set on point, but it is):

The stars are coming out to play:

Also set on point, but looks like a straight set:

Which design appeals to you?  Or would you create a different one?  There are lots of possibilities!

Mother’s Choice Quilt Block

I took some time this week to play with some virtual quilt designing.

The Mother’s Choice block shown in Nancy Martin’s Perpetual Calendar 365 Quilt Blocks A Year was my choice to play with.  I have had this calendar for years and am using it to inspire myself in design.

Drawn on a 12 x 12 grid.

Set in a side by side straight set:

Again, set side by side but with the addition of sashing and cornerstones:

What I like about this block is that when you shift the value, you can bring out the stars!

You can also add and/or delete lines within the block to create alternate blocks.

What I haven’t shown, but what I think would be great fun, is to sew this block with lots of colorful scraps.  The block can be composed of many half square triangles creating lots of opportunities for using scraps.

Those half square triangles also create lots of opportunities to experiment with value placement to create interesting designs.

Happy quilting!

Sister’s Choice Quilt Block Part 2

Sister's Choice

In a previous post, I shared some quilt design options with the Sister’s Choice block, using straight set layouts.

I think it is fun to play with on point layouts as well.

You never know; you might prefer a design on point.

So here is a layout with the Sister’s Choice block and sashing:

The same layout, but a different colorway, and some plain blocks added:

The next few layouts show the Sister’s Choice blocks where some have lines deleted, and some have lines added, to create alternate blocks to play with.

For the lover of quilting designs, it is always nice to have open, or negative, spaces to fill.

For the fun of it, see what happens when you play with the background:

I am sure you can come up with many more ideas; especially when you also play with color/value and border combinations!

Country Roads Quilt Block Part 2

In yesterday’s post, I showed the Country Roads Quilt Block in straight set quilt designs.

Today, let’s look at the block set on point.

Here it is set side by side and on point:

The next sets are also on point, but the Country Roads block has been set with simplified versions of it as well.

I think my border choice needs work, but that is just personal preference (as are many, if not most, aspects of art).
