Tulip Placemats

In June, 2022, I shared a post where I showed a pair of spring placemats, or table toppers.

When Mom passed last July, I inherited a cabinet from her. The cabinet top is the same size as my two side tables (End tables, accent cabinets, side tables…what do you call them?).

I wondered if I had more of the same scraps that I had used for the original tulip placemats, so I dug in the scraps, and I found more.

I am not always matchy-matchy, but it was fun to make this tulip pattern and, of course, tulips do come in lots of colors.

I cut my binding wider than I normally do. I dunno why…senior moment. I am pretty sure that I am not the only one who suffers those.

It looks nice anyway.

She Looks Like a Movie Star

It has been a devastating month. I have not picked up needle and thread and probably won’t next month, either.

That is my update for the Chookshed Stitchers 2024 Challenge – July, and it will be the same next month. I am linking up here, if you would like to see the other participant’s fun projects!

The rest of this post has lots of photos and deep meaning for me. You are welcome to stay if you’d like.

Meet Dorothy Joan Jewell, born in 1931, my Mama (isn’t she adorable!).

I love these old photos…they are a peak into what life was like back in the day!

A four year old Jody (she was never actually called Dorothy), being hugged by her step-daddy, George.

In 1935, five year old Jody had her picture taken professionally with her parents, George and Betty.

Jody, with her brother, George Jr. He liked to be called Uncle Ed (after his middle name, Edward). He was so much fun to be with!

This color photo of Jody in 1938, reminds me so much of my youngest sister!

Jody is growing up! Here she is, about 1947, 16 years old and beautiful!

Mom’s graduation photo, 1949. I thought she was the most beautiful woman in the world when I first saw this photo. I still think so!

I loved the photo so much, that I decided to take an art portrait class and create a quilt to honor her. In 2004, I completed that quilt, and presented it to Mom for Christmas.

You can click on the photo above to enlarge it. It will be much easier to read the label! Then you will understand the title of this portrait quilt.

Mom married Dad (Ray) in 1950. I bet it was a fairy tale wedding!

This is Mom in 1951. I believe it was during her honeymoon.

Five daughters came along for the ride! For the curious, I am the one in the upper right. This photo was taken in 1981.

Here we are again, in 2006. We had a fantastic time together in Victoria, B.C., Canada! Again, I am in the upper right, for the curious.

Still beautiful as ever! I think this photo was taken sometime around 2019. She loved pink, and she wore it well!

December 05, 1931 – July 14, 2024

I know that you have gone before me to a place of glory; a place of brilliant colors and unsurpassed love, but I miss you, Mama,… so, so much!

Douglas Falls

Think of your life as a waterfall; it may come crashing down at some point, it may have it’s ups and downs, but in the end, it will continue to flow.

I am one of those daughters blessed with a Mom to be proud of.  I was fortunate to have her spend a few days with me last week.

One beautiful morning, I drove her to Douglas Falls, about a 15 minute drive from my house.

If you click on the following photo, you will see a young couple enjoying the waterfall.  They give you some perspective of the height of the fall.

Douglas Falls

I’ve been here many times, and I told Mom that the hike down is not too difficult.

To her credit, she believed me.

I should visit the park more often.  I did not realize just how deteriorated and steep the trail had become.

Many times I told her, “This is the steepest part; it’ll be better after this.”

Ahem.

To my credit, I offered to turn back.

To her credit, she said she wanted to keep hiking.

We made it down to the foot bridge, and enjoyed watching Mill Creek flow by.

Mill Creek

I forgot to take a photo of the bridge.  No doubt because I was relieved that we made it there without ending up at the bottom of the trail by sliding on our butts all the way down.

I did, however, take an impressive photo of the creek flowing under the bridge:

I did not have the presence of mind to snap a photo of Mom either.  She wouldn’t have appreciated it anyway.  This was an impulsive little jaunt on my part.  She had curlers in her hair, and no scarf.   But the only people in the park on this morning, were the sweet lovebirds at the top of the waterfall.  We did meet them on the trail and chewed watercress together.

We enjoyed many wildflowers along the hike.

When we hiked to the bottom of Douglas Falls, the view looked like this:

The view from the top of the waterfall.  Yup, we hiked all the way around the waterfall.

Mill Creek before coming to the falls:

Now go back up to the first photo of Douglas Falls and remind yourself that Mom hiked full circle around the falls.

Mom has arthritis in her feet, sometimes making it painful to walk.

Mom is 81 years young.

What keeps you from enjoying God’s gifts?

I love you Mom!  Thank you for your love of life!
