Umpqua River Lighthouse

The Hubster and I recently took a trip to the west coast. We didn’t do a lot of sight seeing as this was a trip specifically to see family. We stopped on the Washington coast to visit our son and his family, and then straight down the Oregon coast to visit my sister and her husband. Sis and I were so excited to see each other…it has been a very long time!

On the way back, we did stop at a couple of places. One of them was the Umpqua River Lighthouse. We left my sister’s home later in the day, so by the time we reached this lighthouse, the museum and lighthouse were closed.

That was okay. We enjoyed being out of the car, and taking in the view!

The Umpqua River Lighthouse was the first lighthouse on the Oregon Coast. It is located near Reedsport,  at the top of the 100-foot bluff overlooking the mouth of the Umpqua River entrance into Winchester Bay.

The lighthouse was built in 1855 and lit in 1857 along the sandy beach of the Umpqua River. Less than 10 years later, in February 1864, a new lighthouse was needed. Due to flooding, the original lighthouse had fallen over.

The original light was not visible at sea and was only usable as an aid to ships approaching the river.

The fully operational and automated light can now be seen as far as 21 nautical miles.

We love visiting the Oregon Coast and have traveled between Bandon and Astoria more than once! It’s all so beautiful and scenic, isn’t it? The history behind the lighthouses is always interesting. So glad you had a chance to go!
