I took some time out to make a few jar grippers. Quite a few…these will be going into my gift box for when I need a quick gift to give.
I used rubber shelf liner that I cut into 5.5″ squares. I meant to cut it into 6″ squares, but I screwed up. No matter, you can cut to any size that you want to work with.
I also cut two pieces of 5.5″ squares of cotton fabric. With right sides together, and the shelf liner in between, sew around the edges and leave an opening for turning.
Turn and topstitch all the way around.
You are done!
There are a lot of tutorials online, especially on YouTube and Pinterest. Besides the differences in the size of the squares, other variations include a magnet and a ribbon for hanging, and some only use one square of fabric and the shelf liner.
Easy peasy, quick and useful.
This can be a scrapbuster, too, if you save chunks of scraps, as opposed to strips.
You might even want to make a smaller size and keep it with your hand sewing for the times that you may need a little help pulling the needle through your project.
Have fun and carry on!

Yep, this one’s a keeper, thanks Laura!

Hi Laura! Brilliant. I’ve been meaning to make some for ages . . . do I remember to do so?! No, I do not. Hmm. I variety of sizes would be handy. But the large size can always be used on smaller jars. Food for thought, so to speak. Thanks for the inspiration. {{Hugs}} ~smile~ Roseanne

These have been on my to-do for a while, too, Rosanne. I don’t know why I waited so long. They are so easy to make! I’ve seen them at craft fairs sell for $3.00 each, and those were made with just one piece of fabric. Just FYI…maybe for your Etsy shop? 🙂

These are a great idea! I will definitely be making some to gift. That shelf-liner ‘fabric’ is so useful isn’t it? When one of our sons broke his wrist we put a piece under his dinner plates and bowls so he could manage to cut up food one-handed without his crockery sliding across the table.

Clever idea, Allison! You can also put a piece of shelf-liner under your sewing machine foot pedal if it is sliding on a wood/tile floor. Useful in a camper too! 🙂

I love these and what a good idea to make as gifts. I was on retreat last week and was missing my tools! I may need to pack one or two for the retreat house for next year!

It is a good idea to keep extra tools in the places that you use them…like a pair of scissors in the hand sewing kit, at the sewing machine and near the ironing board. Always have an emergency kit of sewing tools! 🙂
