Since it was so cool and cloudy we decided on a shopping trip to Manteo on Roanoke Island.
I would love to revisit this beautiful town! Manteo was the first American Indian to receive a title of nobility. He was a liaison between the Roanoke Colony settlers and the Indians.
From Plymouth, England, on 27 April 1584
Walter Raleigh sent Philip Amadas and Arthur Barlowe to North America to explore and prepare for English colonization. On 13 July they claimed land in the name of Queen Elizabeth. Called Virginia in her honor, this area is now known as North Carolina. In 1585 a colony under Governor Ralph Lane settled here on Roanoke Island, remaining a year. In 1587 a second colony under Governor John White established the “Cittie of Ralegh” at the same site. This settlement, known as Raleigh’s “Lost Colony”, disappeared between 1587 and 1590.
Manteo is also home to the Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse, a replica of the one constructed in 1877.
I don’t know anything about this building…I just like it!

I saw the monument as we were driving by, looking for parking. As soon as I saw it, I knew that I was going to walk back and get a picture of it! Only Jess wanted to walk back with me, the others weren’t interested. Perhaps because none of this was new to them? I wanted a record to show that I was standing on the same ground that I have read about in history books!

Hi Laura ~ I just read through all 4 of your vacation post and was blown away by your photography and great history lessons as well. It’s weird cause after reading your comment on my post I thought, wait a minute why aren’t I seeing your posts. I signed up with my email address – again and hopefully this time I will get the notifications. With both our daughters in NC, coastal and with in walking distance (lol) as the crow flies, and us here in WA , so much in common its more than great to be connected. They are in such a beautiful and rich historic area. I am so glad you got to go and visit. That was such a blessing for you. I am hoping to be going in April/May . I want to tell my daughter about some of the places you mentioned as I know they would love visiting them too. In fact they may have been to the Roanoke settlement the last time they were stationed there.

So funny, and so cool, to have so much in common! I hope you have a wonderful visit, as I have, when you go east to see your daughter! I hope you have time to sightsee, too! You are right…there is so much history to experience, and the portions of the coast that I saw are beautiful! I want to go back! 🙂

Wonderful photos! If one visits the outer banks during the summer,they most go to the musical play “The Lost Colony” , I been to it twice ,it’s an amazing drama play.
