Wyoming Valley Star Quilt Block

This week’s practice block is the Wyoming Valley Star.

Wyoming Valley Star Quilt Block

It is drawn with a 6 x 6 grid.

And here is how it looks set side-by-side in a straight set:

How about a little color to add a spark to the quilt?  All I did was draw a line across the four corners of the block and popped the color in.

Let’s open up the design a bit.  This time I deleted lines from the Wyoming Valley Star quilt block to create alternate blocks.

The same block looks different when the color is moved around.

It is nice to have open spaces to show off your quilting skill.

The next design is similar to the first, but the Wyoming Valley Star quilt block is now set on point:

Another variation on point:

Lots of room for quilting!

If I were to make one of these last two, I think I would play with border variations.  I might like something simpler to go with the simpler quilt design.

  1. First of all, I like what you did for the border. Next, I like ex. # 4, it creates some interest in study….folks will wonder what you changed or if you used more than one block. And I really like #7, the var. onpointe. Don’t you wish we had time to make as many quilts and we can in EQ?

  2. Thanks Kat…I think borders are very important for most quilt designs. I know sometimes I just want to slap those suckers on and be done with it. Ha, ha! But it really pays off to give them some thought. It definitely makes for a good challenge, and study, to work with one block. This challenge to myself has been beneficial for me…I’m more confident in quilt design now. Yes, I am thankful for EQ…I probably wouldn’t take the time to draw all of this out on graph paper.

  6. Hi Laura,

I like the way you take a block/quilt and turn it into so many different designs. Are your blocks for sell?
