Wauconda Ghost Town

The next stop on our day trip was Wauconda.

The Hedge brothers founded Wauconda in 1898.  They opened a gold mine here.

Wauconda has been relocated three times.  Although there are many homesteads dotting the landscape, they are inaccessible to the public.

The firepit is behind the school.  It is not original, but I love the stone and the grate.

The teepee is not original either, but interesting, nonetheless.

I like the ladder shadow on the inside of the teepee.

Across from the Wauconda school, the girls were curious about us.

Sherman Pass

Recently, Hubby packed a picnic lunch and took me on a day trip.  The sky was blue and the sunshine felt great!  We couldn’t have asked for a better day for a long drive in the car!

If you like history, then you will enjoy the next few blog posts!

We began the drive by heading west…to Sherman Pass.  There is still plenty of snow up there!

White Mountain

Sherman Pass is located on the Sherman Pass Scenic Byway in my home state of Washington.  It traverses the Colville National Forest in the Cascade Range.

Although these wolves are metal, we do have wolves in our corner of the state.  I have seen them once…in my back yard.  Many of the ranchers in my area are having difficulties with wolves.  As you can imagine, wolves are a very controversial subject here.

This little fella is a Clark’s Nutcracker.  He didn’t mind at all having his picture taken.

Dry Falls and Grand Coulee Dam

Did you know that Dry Falls in Washington State is ten times the size of Niagara?  Yup…Dry Falls is the largest waterfall in the world.  That is, it was the largest waterfall in the world; now it is extinct, but still impressive to see.

My sisters, hubby and I have a Dad Day once a year, where we take him on a day trip, and this year we took him to Dry Falls and Grand Coulee Dam.

Clicking on the photos will give you a closer look.

Grand Coulee Dam is the largest dam in the United States.  We happened to be the last tour of the season.

A fire this summer burned the surrounding hills.

The spillways were not open this day, but still fun to look down from the top of the dam.

I  encourage you to take day trips and explore the countryside where you live.  If you can, take your Dad too!
