Balance

If you haven’t met the quilt block called Balance, then let me introduce you.

Balance Quilt Block

I found this block in Nancy Martin’s Perpetual Calendar 365 Quilt Blocks A Year.

I drew it with a 5 x 5 grid in Electric Quilt .  If you own BlockBase, it is #1817c.

It isn’t often that one sees a green and white quilt (I don’t think I’ve ever seen one…I may have to google that later), but it is March, and I’m longing for spring, so I’ve set this block with green and white.

Here is how it looks in a straight set:

In the following design, I’ve deleted a few lines from the block to create an alternate crossing block to set Balance with.  I’ve also added another green to the mix.

I squared up the quilt design (it isn’t longer than it is wide now) and rearranged the blocks:

Again, Balance is set side-by-side.  The only difference is in the color placement.  Stars have appeared!

An alternate color theme:

By deleting just a few lines, I’ve created another alternate block to add to the mix:

And one more arrangement:

Lots more could be done with this block, so go ahead and play with it!  See what you come up with!

By the way, this block looks amazingly like Bachelor’s Puzzle.

Christmas Tree Quilt Block

I played with the Christmas Tree quilt block this week.  I chose it from Nancy Martin’s Perpetual Calendar 365 Quilt Blocks A Year.

I easily drew the block from a 6 x 6 grid.

Here is how it looks set on point in a quilt design:

And here is what happens when the blocks are rotated:

I like it!

How about adding a group of friendly snowman:

The snowmen will look cute when they are embellished with thread and buttons!

I found the applique shapes in Electric Quilt’s library.  I did alter them a bit, but EQ sure makes designing so much easier!

One more:

I need more contrast, but otherwise I’m happy with the designs.

Merry Christmas to you and your families!

Arkansas Crossroads Quilt Block

I chose to play with the Arkansas Crossroads quilt block from Nancy Martin’s Perpetual Calendar 365 Quilt Blocks A Year.

You may know the block as Road to Oklahoma.

Arkansas Crossroads Quilt Block

It is drawn with a 4 x 4 grid.

Here is how the Arkansas Crossroads block looks when set side-by-side in a straight set:

When the alternate blocks are rotated, one sees how this block got its name:

Let’s move the color around.  As in the first design, the Arkansas Crossroads block is in a straight set (I see blue and yellow bow ties!):

Surprise!  Stars show up when rotating the alternate blocks:

Another design using just the Arkansas Crossroads quilt block without altering the block and using variations of the block, or adding other blocks, or sashing:

Only the corner block has been altered.  I simply deleted a few lines of the Arkansas Crossroads block to create space.

On another day, perhaps I’ll play with adding other elements.  However, it is nice to know that all we need is one block, some color and rotation to create several unique designs.
