I shared visiting the Parish House at Old Mission State Park in this blog post.

Today, I am sharing photos of the Mission of the Sacred Heart.  This is the oldest building in Idaho.

“In 1850, the church was taken over by Italian Jesuit missionary Antonio Ravalli, who began designing the new mission building. He had the building constructed by the Indians themselves, so they would feel part of the church. It was built using the wattle and daub method, and finished some three years later without using nails.”

“Though they had few materials to decorate the church, they used ingenious techniques to beautify it. The walls were decorated with fabric bought from the Hudson’s Bay Company and hand-painted newspaper from Philadelphia that Fr. Ravalli had received in the mail. Tin cans were used to create an idea of chandeliers. Both wooden statues were carved by hand by Fr. Rivalli with nothing but a knife and we’re intended to look like marble. The blue coloring of the interior wood is not paint but a stain created by pressing local huckleberries into the wood.”

While on vacation last week, Hubby and I visited Old Mission State Park in Idaho.  The first time that we visited (thirty something years ago), the park was undeveloped (no visitor fees; no visitor’s center) and we had small children with us.

It was just as interesting this time around, since I sure don’t remember everything that I saw from yesterday, let alone thirty something years ago!

Today, I will share photos about the Parish House.  Since I have so many photos, the next blog post will show pictures of the Mission of the Sacred Heart…the oldest building in Idaho.

Hubby and I walked the grounds, as we did when we had small children and they needed to stretch their legs.  The park is a beautiful , serene place to walk.  There are cemeteries and woods to explore, as well as open grassy areas with picnic tables.

While walking, we flushed out a moose.  No photos…we were all surprised and the moose went his way, and we went ours.

If you are traveling, need a rest area and enjoy history, I recommended this little park!
