Baton Rouge Square Quilt Block

I played with the Baton Rouge Square quilt block this week.

Baton Rouge Square Quilt Block

I drew it in Electric Quilt with a 5 x 5 grid.  If you have BlockBase, it is #1808.

Here is the block set side-by-side:

I like the floating yellow diamonds.

With a slight variation to the Baton Rouge quilt block, I now have a pretty little alternate block to create a new design with.

And again, playing with slight variations, both in drawing, and in color placement:

I’d explore the above a bit more.  I can see stars in that alternate block, and it could be worthwhile to make those more prominent.

All I did to create the next design was change the direction of the purple/white half square triangles.

One doesn’t have to make big drawing changes to create an impact in one’s design.  Just start small and see what happens.

By the time that I created the next two designs, I was warmed up and having fun!

The above requires some work, but it definitely has potential.

I’ve got about 30 design variations in my project folder, and I haven’t tried turning this block on point yet.  That will be next week’s play.

Which do you like best?  Or none at all?

Barrister’s Block

Let’s take a look at the Barrister’s Block.

Barrister's Block

I drew the block from an 8 x 8 grid using Electric Quilt.  If you have BlockBase, it is number 1363.

Here is how it looks set side-by-side in a straight set:

There is a lot of movement created by this block.  It can be calmed down by simply moving the color around.

In the next design, every other block has been rotated.  And I’ve altered the Barrister’s Block just a little bit.

Again…the same setting, but the color has been moved around.  That change shifted the emphasis from the smaller triangles to the large half square triangles.  It looks boxy.

Aunt Mary’s Double Irish Chain Quilt Block Part 2

Last week, I showed the Aunt Mary’s Double Irish Chain quilt block in various straight settings.

I also said that this block was a challenge for me.  Putting it on point has not changed that.  This block is still a challenge for me.

Here it is, set in a simple on point layout:

Not the most creative, but I like it better than a lot of the alternatives that I tried!

The strippy look:

Not a fan of the above.  The next one is better (so far as I am concerned):

Use those white spaces to showcase applique or quilting:

I couldn’t stand it…I had to add another block!  How about some stars?

I like that one (although it looks like I might reconsider how I am coloring some of those yellow stars)!
