Aunt Mary’s Double Irish Chain Quilt Block Part 2

Last week, I showed the Aunt Mary’s Double Irish Chain quilt block in various straight settings.

I also said that this block was a challenge for me.  Putting it on point has not changed that.  This block is still a challenge for me.

Here it is, set in a simple on point layout:

Not the most creative, but I like it better than a lot of the alternatives that I tried!

The strippy look:

Not a fan of the above.  The next one is better (so far as I am concerned):

I couldn’t stand it…I had to add another block!  How about some stars?

I like that one (although it looks like I might reconsider how I am coloring some of those yellow stars)!

I played with Aunt Mary’s Double Irish Chain quilt block this week.

I drew it from a 8 x 8 grid, but if you own BlockBase, it is #2342.

Here is how the block looks when set side by side in a straight set:

This block was a real challenge for me.  I had a creative blockage, and I really fought the temptation to do a google search.  However, I resisted.  I have never yet resorted to looking at how someone else has used a block.  I don’t want the influence…I want to see what I can come up with on my own.  Otherwise, what is the point in playing with blocks?

So, a little rearranging of the values to get those creative juices started:

Of course, the design doesn’t have to be a two color quilt (and there are gorgeous traditional two color quilts), and the blues and whites could be scraps of all shades and tints of blue and white.

Or yellow stars could be added to the mix:

It isn’t hard to add the lines to the Aunt Mary’s Double Irish Chain block to create the stars, but they can be found in Electric Quilt’s block library.  I found a crossing block to play with too.

One more…again moving the value around…just to see if I might like it better:

Super Mario Brothers

Some time ago, I came across Angela Pingel’s wonderful blog, Cut to Pieces, and I thought that her Super Mario Bros. Quilt Along was a terrific project.

However, the timing wasn’t right for me.  Nor did I really want to make an entire quilt out of 1-1/2 inch squares!

But I could make a pillow or two.

One of my grandsons is having a birthday in February.  Guess what he will be getting from Grandma?

I chose the Mushroom and Luigi blocks to create the pillows.  They are made from a combination of commercial and hand dyed fabrics.  Luigi’s face is washed out in the photos…he really is a nice peachy color!

The pillow front is a quilt sandwich…the block, a layer of batting, and a muslin backing.  It is quilted with Aurifil 50 wt. in the bobbin, and Superior Monopoly.  I chose the clear thread so that it would blend with all of the fabrics in the blocks.

It blended so well that I could barely see where I had quilted and where I still needed to quilt.  That was a challenge all by itself!

The pillow backs are a cotton print reinforced by a Pellon stabilizer.  I also sewed covered zippers into the backs.

An 18″ pillow form will fit into these pillow covers nicely.  For now, I stuffed a roll of batting into Luigi…just to get an idea of how it will look.  The pillow covers have to be shipped to my grandson, so they will be shipped without the pillow forms (but there will be a check included, so that Mom can go purchase them for him).

Perhaps this is something you might like to do for your own child/grandchild?  Head on over to Cut to Pieces; Angela has more characters to choose from than just Luigi and Mushroom.

And maybe you are just ambitious enough to make the entire quilt!
